Junior Ambassador Series ♥
Getting to know our Junior Ambassador, Eliza Wenham.
How old are you?
I turned 14 years old at the end of last year.
When did you start ballet?
I began ballet when I was 3 years old.
What is the story, were you always dancing around the house?
From a very young age, I remember that I have always loved dancing to music and getting lost in the movement. When I was 7 or 8, I began choreographing shows with my little sister. Every weekend, I’d make up a dance and include my little sister, then we’d perform it to my parents in the living room. (I still love to do shows in the lounge room with my sister!)
What do you love about ballet?
I love everything about ballet. From working hard, to strengthening and improving my technique, to the freedom of dancing to the most wonderful music and being able to express emotion. I also love that ballet allows you to be anyone or anything, from a Princess to a Swan.
What is your dance dream?
My dream is to one day attend one of the world's top ballet schools, then to progress into a wonderful ballet company and to be able to dance many different roles on stage. It has always been my dream to perform in Giselle, Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake.
Do you have a favourite dancer, what is it about her that inspires you?
Marianela Nunez. What I love most is her artistry; this is what moves me when she dances.
You have been fortunate to attend both the Royal Ballet School and Paris Opera Ballet School Summer intensive, what is the process of audition for each of these?
For the Paris Opera Ballet Summer Intensive, I was required to film and make a video audition of me doing a full barre, centre and then some pointe work. For the Royal Ballet Summer Intensive, I was required to take 5 different photos in 5 required set positions.
Did you attend the both in the same year?
Yes, I attended both in the June/July of 2016, it was such an incredible experience. Though I auditioned and was accepted again last year into both Summer Intensives and well as the Houston Ballet Academy 6 weeks Summer Intensive - unfortunately my family was unable to make the trip overseas again. This year however, I attended an audition in Sydney for the Houston Ballet 6 week Summer Intensive and I was accepted!
How did they differ from each other?
I think the biggest difference was - at the Paris Opera all of the teachers and most of the students spoke French, so it was quite hard to read the timetables at first. Luckily the ballet language is in French, so that made classes a little easier!. We also did the most amazing strengthening floor barre class everyday, I still do some of the exercises as part of my warm up program.
At Whitelodge (Royal Ballet School), we did Irish and Flamenco dancing which I had never tried before, I absolutely loved these classes!
What are your goals for this year?
To keep enjoying the journey, working hard, and growing as both a dancer and a person.
What do you love to do outside of dance?
I love spending time with my family. Whether it’s playing board games, going to the beach or having hilarious dinner conversations. I especially love playing with my sister, Millie. I also love travelling and going on holidays with my family!
Do you have a secret talent?!?
I play the Flute (currently working on Grade 5 AMEB exam).
I love to read and have many favourite books, I couldn't choose just one! I think that my top 3 would be;
- Harry Potter
- Mao’s Last Dancer
